<펀펀 독서열차>_ Public Art Project with Seoul Metro 1

I participated in the public art project for Seoul Metro within the theme of 'Imaginary world in Books'. The metro run from May 4th to June 3rd in Seoul. This is a brief record about the project.

서울메트로와 함께하는 랩핑 프로젝트에 작가로 참여했습니다. 서울 지하철 3호선 맨 끝량에 랩핑되어 약 한달간 운행 되었으며, 5월 4일 첫 운행을 시작해서 6월 3일 마지막 운행을 마쳤습니다. 작업 과정과 결과물의 간략한 기록입니다.

These are part of my very early sketches. Ideas included a book-lover-monster who secretely lives in the subway, personified seats and handles with dialogues printed on them, interactive illustrations that invite people to be part of them while seated or standing, and application of a variety of textures and patterns.

 프로젝트 초반부에 구상했던 아이디어 스케치의 일부입니다. 지하철에 숨어서 살고있는 책을 좋아하는 괴물을 중심으로 한 스토리텔링, 지하철 내의 의자/손잡이/문 등에 텍스트를 입혀 사물들이 사람에게 말을 거는 듯한 장면의 연출, 사람들이 서있거나 앉아있을 때 풍경이 완성되는 인터랙션을 강조한 방향, 다양한 텍스쳐와 패턴의 적용 등 다양한 안들을 떠올렸습니다.

 It was discussed later that, the images should be easily understood and accepted as the subway is used daily by the general public, and the original objective was to create a space for children and families. Thus, we selected world classics and Korean fairytales as the main themes of the project.

 추후 논의 과정에서 어린이와 가족을 위한 열차라는 기본 취지와 불특정 다수의 일반 대중이 일상적으로 이용하는 지하철의 특성을 고려하여, 누구나 쉽게 이해하고 거부감없이 받아들일 수 있는 이미지어야 한다는 의견이 지배적이었고, 이에 따라 세계 명작과 한국의 전래동화를 테마로 한 일러스트레이션을 제작하기로 최종 결정됐습니다.

I and another illustrator(Kyungwon Huh) shared a carriage, depicting stories of Peter Pan and Cinderella, and Korean fairytales respectively. 

3호선 열차 한 량을 허경원 작가와 나누어 작업했으며, 저는 세계명작 부분을 맡아 피터팬과 신데렐라를 주제로 작업했습니다.

Selected for the finalist at Design Competition (KDFF)

My works are selected for the finalist at KDFF with the theme of 'Imagine Your Jeju'.

이번에 운이 좋게도 제 작업이 1300K에서 주최하는 'IMAGINE YOUR JEJU' 공모전의 파이널리스트 20에 들었습니다. 최종결정에는 고객님(!)들의 투표가 큰 영향을 미친다고 하여 쑥쓰러움과 민망함을 무릅쓰고 이렇게 글을 올립니다. (쑥스러워서 인터넷 기사에 댓글 한번 못달아본 1人)

많은 소리가 들리지 않고, 또 많은 소리가 들리는 제주의 밤.

Night 02

이 운치있는 봄밤에 마음맞는 이와 술잔을 기울이며 두런두런 이야기 나누는 것만큼 마음을 기쁘게 하는 일이 또 있을꼬. 주거니받거니 오가는 말에 웃음이 실리니 강바람 제법 차도 맘은 그렇지 않다. 깔깔 웃고 돌아와 따뜻한 이불덮고 누우니, 기분좋은 노곤함이 오늘은 틀림없이 잠이 잘 올 것 같다. 이런날의 흥취는 참으로 아깝다. 고이 간직해두었다가 사는게 쓰린 날 꺼내어 꼭 껴안고 볼을 부벼야지.

Night 01

퇴근 후, 잠들기 전 오롯한 나만의 시간. 별 생각없이 손이 가는대로 그리는 것들을 오려서 이리저리 붙여본다. 낮 동안 명확하게 정해진 의도와 목적, 기간 안에서 움직이던 머리와 손이 쉴 수 있는 시간.

How the little things grow_story of square

 

 

It is a message of support about 'being honest about one's desire through life', not being swept away by majority and so called 'the standard'. At the same time, it is a story about being oneself in journey of following one's own desire.

A story of a square who longs to be a circle after witnessing it bouncing away. At first, it tries to imitate the circle. But after several trials, it gradually finds its own way of flying - the square folds itself as an aeroplane and finally flies up to the sky. It has found freedom in being oneself.

How the little things grow_story of circle

 When we encounter a new world, there exist fear as well as flutter of excitement. At that time, we go back to a child - small and vulnerable being. Sometimes, that fear in mind makes us harder to percept the world properly. However, everyone has something that gives them love and comfort. It could be family or friends, God or nature for someone, or such a small object for some other. Whatever that is, we recovers from that, and then we are able to see the world as it is, in love.

A story of a yellow circle entering the new world of black and white which is both big and frightening. It begins to lose its shape and colour as it is worn out in the world. But after it meets a big warm Yellow down the hole, the circle recovers, gaining back its original shape and colour. Then when the little circle returns to the new world again, it finds the world to have been actually colourful and friendly.

How the little things grow_story of them

We laugh more, get hurt more, and grow the most when we are together.

A story of a square, a circle, and a triangle. All the characters from previous books come together and start their adventure in new, bizarre world. Whenever they meet obstacles, they solve them by being a good team.
